Electric mobility is growing, and with it the demands placed on modern charging infrastructure. As well as charging capacity and location, the right lighting also plays an important role. It ensures safety in the dark, improves wayfinding and raises the profile of the operator’s brand.
Light and Sign has implemented a bespoke lighting concept for a Mer fast-charging station in Kaiserslautern, combining functional illumination with lighting design in keeping with the brand’s identity.
Lighting for modern charging infrastructure
In charging parks, lighting has to fulfil a variety of functions. The charging bays should be evenly lit with as little glare as possible. At the same time, the site should be clearly recognisable from a distance and reflect the operator’s corporate identity.
For the Mer charging station in Kaiserslautern, the focus was therefore on two areas:
- Illuminated blue pilaster strips on the boot lid as a striking element of the brand identity
- Funktionale Beleuchtung der Ladeplätze, Stellflächen und Aufenthaltsbereiche
We have already implemented a similar concept combining brand impact and functional lighting in our project for AVIA Volt in Hamburg Harburg.

Blue pilasters for a strong brand impact
A key design feature is the illuminated blue pilaster strip running along the roof of the charging station. This continuous strip of light echoes Mer’s brand colour and ensures that the charging station is clearly visible even in the dark.
This means that lighting also serves as a design element. The site takes on a modern look, and the brand remains visible even from a distance.
Such a long-range effect is particularly crucial at charging parks, petrol stations and mobility hubs. We also demonstrate how lighting and outdoor advertising can work together in this context in our article on lighting and outdoor advertising for petrol stations.
Luci downlights and ambient lighting
Two different lighting concepts are used for functional lighting.
The Ambiente mast lights provide wide-area general lighting for the access areas and parking spaces. In addition, Luci downlights fitted beneath the loading canopy provide targeted lighting for the individual loading bays.
This ensures that charging points, sockets, charging cables and control panels remain clearly visible even in the dark. At the same time, it creates a pleasantly lit charging area that combines safety with a pleasant environment.
Modern LED technology not only offers design possibilities, but also enables efficient and long-lasting lighting. You can find out more about the link between light, efficiency and brand impact in our article on LED lighting for business premises.

Safety meets brand identity
The project in Kaiserslautern demonstrates how functional lighting and corporate identity can be combined to form a coherent overall concept.
The blue pilaster strip ensures the building is easily recognisable and visible from a distance. Ambient lighting and downlights work together to provide even and safe lighting around the loading bays.
The result is a modern charging station that is not only highly functional but also showcases the Mer brand prominently, even in the dark.
